Genre analysis of introduction section in electrical engineering undergraduate laboratory reports

Background: This study examines the genre of Engineering Laboratory Reports (ELR) introduction section written by Electrical Undergraduates in a higher learning institution. The aims this are to identify rhetorical moves and combinations move patterns used engineering students write ELR. Method: A analysis was conducted writing convention practices undergraduate thus corpus N= 35 selected from electrical their final year study. adopted Genre Theory as its theoretical framework, [1] analytical framework [2] BCU approach for procedure. pilot test determine model that fits best describe steps ELR. benchmarks or step be present at least 60% reports. Results discussion: finding shows consists one main which is providing background information experiment followed four subsequent reference research purposes, knowledge field, an overview identification apparatus. 1 all identified above viewed obligatory, conventional optional steps. exemplification lack compliance among undergraduates produce ELR based on university’s guideline discussing previous literature underpinning theories, references citation, absence description apparatus non-sequential steps. Conclusion: posits importance collaboration between English Academic (EAP) practitioners such English-writing instructors discipline specific specialist field further improve genre-based instruction, support student’s understanding meeting requirements scientific technical reports.
